Around the basketball world at this time of the year the term “March Madness” refers to an exciting time of college tournament action. For a team to be invited to this tournament they must first learn to work together as a team and prove they can win against good teams.
To be a winning team, a coach must first put the team players to the test to determine their abilities and their desire to perform to the best of their abilities. A player who is tall and strong would be wasted if forced to play away from the basket where their height would not be used to score and rebound.
A person who is fast and can handle the basketball well is needed to get the ball from one end of the court to the other. If they were forced to play under the basket they would be of very little use among the “giants.”
God’s people should learn to “work together” to achieve a total teamwork which can prove to be a winner. God has given special talents and gifts to all His children. Each child of God should seek out those gifts, exercise them to the glory of God and work together with other church members who God has given to their local congregation to serve and to meet the needs of the community in which they live.
The Psalmist wrote, “How pleasant and how good it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.” (Psalm 133:1) For Christians to dwell together in unity each one much serve the Lord as they have been gifted by God. Just as a great basketball team works together, each one doing what they are best qualified to do, they can overcome great odds and defeat teams which may have more skilled ball players but do not work together as a single unit. Just as a fine-tuned watch works to produce the correct time only when each part does its job, a great church must work together to meet the needs of her community in such a way as to manifest Christ among all who live there. Good players, working together as a single unit will win; not because they are great players, but because they work together for the good of the team.
Great churches are successful not because they have great people, but because they work together for the good of the “team;” the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. To God be the glory for all His church can achieve!
